Farewell Dear Ghost

One of Austria’s finest, Farewell Dear Ghost, have just released their new EP SKIN. At their show in Munich with Nada Surf we took our chance to ask them a couple of things…

So you’re on tour with Nada Surf atm – how’s it all going?
Philipp: Amazing! Nada Surf are just the sweetest people, and so is the whole crew. We’re having lots of fun together.

You guys just released your new EP, can you tell us about it?
Alex: Sure. We did a small tour in China last year… the trip really brought us together and inspired us all a lot. The EP is basically us processing that tour, the artwork is a photo from China. We really connected the whole EP with that trip.

If you had to choose… stage or studio?
Both: Stage!
Philipp: They are both two totally different and amazing things, but if I’d have to choose I’d pick stage, for sure.

Is there someone you’d really like to work with?
Alex: Brian Eno!
Philipp: The National!
Alex: Yeah, basically working with the Dessner twins – that would be insane.
Philipp: Oh yeah. I’m a massive fan of The National – I’m even writing my thesis about them. They would be at the top of our To-Do-List.

What do you think about streaming services? Do you think it’s a good thing or do you think it rather harms a band?
Philipp: We really like them, as they give artists the opportunity to reach people. But the thing with money is really another issue…
However, basically it’s a great thing, being able to release your music worldwide without much effort.

Alex: It’s also pretty much the time we live in, I don’t think it makes much sense to be against it, you know? You get lots of attention on Spotify etc. – so that’s definitely amazing and helpful to a band.

Are you using streaming services yourself?
Philipp: Yeah, I do. Our drummer is a massive vinyl collector – good dude – but he’s using Spotify too.

Do you enjoy going to live shows when you have the chance? Are you going to a lot of shows?
Philipp: Absolutely! I actually go quite often, yes. I really enjoy learning from live shows. It doesn’t matter if they are big or tiny, or how good or bad they are – you can always learn something and take it home with you. What you shouldn’t do, what you can improve on and so on… I think that’s a cool thing about live shows. To see new things, to get inspired.

Is there a concert in particular you’ve gone to, that sticks out as being a favourite?
Philipp: Hm, a few, yes! A big one was Ryan Adams in London, it was a solo show. That was insanely amazing. Also both The National Shows I’ve seen – one of them at Lake Garde – unbelievable scenery, obviously. Or Oasis at Wembley. That was two weeks before they split up. So yeah, there have been quite a few highlights for me.
Alex: For me it was definitely Radiohead at an Open Air Show at Castle Grounds, that was just great.

Is there a topic you enjoy writing about most?
Philipp: I’d sum it up and say – things that hurt. Things that make me think, that keep me up at night. When I’m happy I don’t wanna write it down. But when I think about the stuff that makes me sad… it just helps to write it down. It’s all about emotion.

Are you writing your songs all together or is there a songwriter in the band?
Philipp: I write most of the lyrics on my own, but the music is pretty much everyone’s work.

Lyrics or music first? Or does that vary?
Philipp: Most of the time we do the music first – I’m a really slow lyric-writer, ha!

And what are the plans for the near future?
Alex: Oh we leave everything open I’d say, at least when it’s about dreams and goals! We really wanna record an album in the summer, or at least start to record it. We’re playing quite a few festivals, so that should be fun. We just wanna get playing live as much as possible – that’s definitely going well at the moment, together with Nada Surf!

Alex: Brian Eno!
Philipp: The National!
Also die wären schon sehr weit oben auf unserer To-Do Liste.

Philipp: Definitiv! Eigentlich sehr viel sogar.

Es geht also hauptsächlich Emotion.
