We did a little Q&A with Joshua from the Berlin-based band Ωracles. Their debut album will be out on May 27. We’ve already heard it and can guarantee you: it’s a smasher!
Name one record that influenced your life the most.
I can’t really say that there has been one piece of music or one album that has been my main influence. It’s rather the combination of different musical influences that’s interesting and to put it that way, creates a musical identity. There is one album though that all of us guys have adored over the last two or three years, “Spirit Of Eden” by Talk Talk.
What’s your favorite place to write music?
In bed or in the studio. In bed, cause I can concentrate on an instrument and my voice and the lyrics and don’t waste too much time on trying out all the endless possibilities of my computer software. In the studio, cause I can record all the instruments while simultaneously writing the song. That kind of works in the home studio as well, but a real set of drums and loud electric guitars give you a whole different dynamic and resonance when writing.
Are there any non-musical influences for you / the band?
Film and literature play a big part. The smallest parts can be found in your own work. I think music takes up such a big space in our life that everything around us influences our musical work. At the same time music itself influences the rest of our life. Actually, there’s no inside and outside.
What is your favorite hangover cure?
You either need at least two people naked in bed or outside in the sunshine in the park or at the lake. In both scenarios you need lots of water and greasy food.
Who’s your favorite producer of all time?
I imagine some sort of Hindu god with eight arms and the heads of Brian Eno, George Martin, Sonic Boom, Joe Meek, Brian Wilson, Conny Plank, Tim Friese-Greene, James Murphy… There is never a definite answer to these kind of questions. They all matter!
If you were a superhero, who would you be?
Silversurfer. He’s pretty lonely but he’s the most wicked surfer in the universe and comes down to Earth, like the stranger who just shows up at your house party and everyone thinks he’s so impressive and wants to have sex with him, and he’s silver…
Actually I thought of Silversurfer cause Irmin Schmidt wears this amazing technicolor jacket with him on the back in some WDR live thing and Future Days by Can is playing in the background at the moment.

Which book do you wish you’d have written?
I could think of quite a few books of which I would wish I hadn’t written them, had I written them.
What are you listening to in the van while touring?
I remember lots of Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush. Well, at least if it’s Niklas who’s driving. Dennis, Niklas and me once had an incredibly moving car ride with the first Coldplay album between Kopenhagen and Berlin. It was almost miraculous that we did get the last ferry after having driven massive detours thanks to a bike marathon and typos on the navigation system. “Don’t Panic”, “High Speed” and, once we had reached the port, “Everything’s Not Lost”.

Nenne ein Album welches dein Leben am meinsten beeinflusst hat.
Ich kann nicht sagen, dass es ein musikalisches Werk oder Album gegeben hat, das mich hauptsächlich beeinflusst hätte. Es ist ja eher die Kombination verschiedener musikalischer Einflüsse, die spannend ist und sozusagen eine musikalische Identität ausmacht. Ein Album fällt mir ein, das wir mit Ωracles kollektiv unheimlich bewundert haben in den letzten zwei bis drei Jahren; nämlich: “Spirit Of Eden” von Talk Talk.
Wo schreibst du am liebsten Songs?
Im Bett oder im Studio. Im Bett, weil ich mich dann auf ein Instrument und den Gesang und Text konzentriere und nicht zu viel Zeit an die endlosen Möglichkeiten meiner Computersoftware verliere. Im Studio, weil ich dort alle Instrumente aufnehmen und simultan den Song schreiben kann. Das geht im Homestudio auch irgendwie aber ein echtes Schlagzeug und laute E-Gitarren geben einem noch mal eine ganz andere Dynamik und Resonanz beim Schreiben.
Lasst ihr euch auch von anderen Sachen als der Musik inspirieren?
Film und Literatur spielen eine große Rolle. Die kleinsten Partikel finden sich nachher in der eigenen Arbeit wieder. Ich denke da Musik einen so großen Teil in unserem leben einnimmt, beeinflusst alles um uns herum auf irgendeine Weise unser musikalisches Schaffen. Die Musik selbst beeinflusst aber auch ganz direkt den Rest unseres Lebens. Eigentlich gibt es da kein Innen und Außen mehr.
Bestes Mittel gegen einen Kater?
Entweder mindestens zu zweit nackt im Bett, oder draußen in der Sonne im Park oder am See. In beiden Fällen mit viel Wasser und fettigem Essen.
Wer ist euer Lieblings Produzent aller Zeiten?
Ich stelle mir eine Art Hindu Gott mit acht Armen vor und den Köpfen von Brian Eno, George Martin, Sonic Boom, Joe Meek, Brian Wilson, Conny Plank, Tim Friese-Greene, James Murphy… Es gibt nie eine absolute Antwort auf diese Fragen. Alle wichtig!

Bei welchem Buch würdest du dir wünschen du hättest es geschrieben?
Mir würden eine Hand voll Bücher einfallen die ich, wenn ich sie geschrieben hätte, lieber doch nicht geschrieben hätte.
Was hört ihr im Tourbus wenn ihr unterwegs seid?
Ich erinnere mich an viel Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell und Kate Bush. Jedenfalls wenn Niklas am Steuer sitzt. Dennis, Niklas und ich hatten mal eine unheimlich bewegende Autofahrt mit der ersten Coldplay zwischen Copenhagen und Berlin. Wie durch ein Wunder bekamen wir noch die letzte Fähre, nach dem wir wegen eines Radrennens und Tippfehlern ins Navi riesige Umwege gefahren sind. “Don’t Panic”, “High Speed” und dann am Fährhafen “Everything’s Not Lost”.
